Jessica Reese is a Research Intern at the Center for News, Technology & Innovation. She holds a B.S. in Political Science from the University of Southern Mississippi and a M.A. from the University of Maryland, College Park where she is also pursuing a Ph.D. in Political Science. Her research sits at the intersection of American politics and media, with concentrations in political ideology, voting behavior, black political behavior, black conservatism and news media literacy.
Before joining CNTI, Jessica conducted experimental research both as a research assistant at the University of Maryland and as the principal investigator through UMD’s Department of Government and Politics Experimental Research and UCLA’s Race, Ethnicity, Politics, and Society (REPS) Omnibus Lab.
Her current working papers include “Is You Is or Is You Ain’t: The Dual Pathway Theory of Black Conservative Expression” and “Informed but Not Immune: How News Media Literacy Shapes Reactions to Political Violence”. Jessica’s work also extends into interdisciplinary spaces. She co-authored a piece featured in UMD’s David C. Driskell Center art exhibition American Will Be!, titled “Reimagining the American Flag: Black Art and Emotional Complexity,” which examined black Americans’ emotional and patriotic ambivalence in response to flag imagery created by black artists.
