CNTI attended AIJC’s 19th annual conference and led a panel session, “Creating a global approach to safeguarding journalists’ digital safety.”

In this panel discussion, we brought together African and global experts for a deliberative discussion about journalists’ digital safety threats in the African region and global contexts, particularly in digital security and policy. CNTI Senior Researcher Kirsten Eddy gave a brief opening presentation based on the findings of CNTI’s issue primer on digital security threats, which provides an overview of the current global state of journalists’ digital safety and current resources available. In a panel moderated by Guy Berger, an independent expert and consultant in media and internet policy issues and Distinguished Fellow at Research ICT Africa, panelists then discussed how African journalists can help create a global understanding of journalistic risks in the digital realm and develop a global network of support in countering cyber threats.

Sulemana Braimah, Executive Director, Media Foundation for West Africa
Paula Fray, President, The New Humanitarian
Tobi Oluwatola, Executive Director, Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development
Pamella Makotsi-Sittoni, Executive Editor and Managing Editor, Daily Nation

CNTI also hosted a listening session to hear from AIJC participants about how CNTI’s work could be of value to them and to hear about the key issues facing journalists in the African region.
