{"id":8374,"date":"2025-05-01T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-01T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cntiwpedev.wpenginepowered.com\/?p=8374"},"modified":"2025-12-16T17:15:51","modified_gmt":"2025-12-16T22:15:51","slug":"world-press-freedom-day-2025-about-half-of-surveyed-journalists-report-their-government-seeks-too-much-control-over-their-journalism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cnti.org\/surveys\/world-press-freedom-day-2025-about-half-of-surveyed-journalists-report-their-government-seeks-too-much-control-over-their-journalism\/","title":{"rendered":"World Press Freedom Day 2025: About Half of Surveyed Journalists Report Their Government Seeks Too Much Control Over Their Journalism"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-aktiv-grotesk-condensed-font-family has-delta-font-size\" id=\"h-introduction\" style=\"text-transform:capitalize\">Introduction<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">May 3, 2025 marks the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/press-freedom-day#:~:text=Origins%20and%20purpose%20of%20the,recommendation%20of%20UNESCO's%20General%20Conference.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">32nd anniversary<\/a><\/span> of World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) which, as described by the United Nations, serves as a \u201creminder to governments of the need to respect their commitment to press freedom\u2026 [as well as] a day of reflection among media professionals about issues of press freedom and professional ethics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2024, the Center for News, Technology &amp; Innovation (CNTI) highlighted <a href=\"https:\/\/cnti.org\/article\/world-press-freedom-scores-fall-back-to-1993-levels-the-launch-year-of-world-press-freedom-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">global trends<\/span><\/a> revealing that while global press freedoms grew from the 1990s to early 2000s, by the early 2020s, they deteriorated back to 1993 levels. These findings supported other research showcasing the <a href=\"https:\/\/akademie.dw.com\/en\/curtailing-media-freedom-in-democracies\/a-63331700\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">erosion of press freedoms<\/span><\/a>. These downward trends continued over the past year \u2014 data which is further detailed in our <a href=\"https:\/\/cnti.org\/article\/aggregated-country-data\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">aggregated database<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-gridible-responsive-spacer\" style=\"height:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-gridible-responsive-spacer\" style=\"height:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<iframe title=\"Protection from censorship and harassment have decreased since 2012 \" aria-label=\"Interactive line chart\" id=\"datawrapper-chart-hVaKz\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/hVaKz\/1\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"width: 0; min-width: 100% !important; border: none;\" height=\"528\" data-external=\"1\"><\/iframe><script>!function(){\"use strict\";window.addEventListener(\"message\",(function(a){if(void 0!==a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"]){var e=document.querySelectorAll(\"iframe\");for(var t in a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"])for(var r,i=0;r=e[i];i++)if(r.contentWindow===a.source){var d=a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"][t]+\"px\";r.style.height=d}}}))}();\n<\/script>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-gridible-responsive-spacer\" style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-gridible-responsive-spacer\" style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For WPFD 2025, we build on last year\u2019s research by examining data from CNTI\u2019s recent international <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cnti.org\/2024-journalist-survey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">survey of journalists<\/a><\/span> which included questions about how they perceive their government\u2019s relationship to journalism as well as personal experiences with government overreach. We consider these responses in aggregate, by type of government and by experiences with government harms and interference. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the main findings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>About half of journalists surveyed (54%) report their government seeks too much control over the journalism they produce.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Surveyed journalists in autocracies and electoral democracies report more government control than those in liberal democracies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Journalists who report (1) having personal experience with government overreach and (2) facing high levels of risk are more likely to say their government seeks too much control.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strong majorities of respondents do not think it is OK for their government to define journalism or journalists. This position does not depend on their perspective on government control; about half of respondents say there is too much control and about half say their government is neutral or supportive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-gridible-responsive-spacer\" style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These issues have been discussed at CNTI <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cnti.org\/article\/the-global-threat-to-journalists-safety-online-and-offline-lessons-from-mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">convenings<\/a><\/span> as well as in CNTI\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cnti.org\/article\/journalists-online-abuse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">issue primers<\/a><\/span> and are particularly relevant as journalists face <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cnti.org\/article\/journalists-cyber-threats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">online security threats<\/a><\/span> and surveillance from governments (or actors affiliated with the government). These data were collected between October 14, 2024 and December 1, 2024, which means they highlight the perspective of journalists around the world during that time frame. These data reflect the responses collected from 433 journalists across 63 countries. Journalists who report experiencing at least one form of government overreach are more likely to report that their government seeks too much control over their content than those who have not experienced government overreach (68% and 40%, respectively).
